‘How to Save the High Street’: Professor Cathy Parker on Panorama

Professor Cathy Parker contributed to a Panorama special looking at UK high streets, aired on 13th January 2020.

Examining the trend of retail closures across the UK, host Adam Shaw, spoke with Cathy to provide the history and modern context of how people use towns and cities, and what makes an inviting and attractive proposition on the high street.

The show looked at a number of real case studies including Stockton and Southsea, both of which are thinking in different ways about how to reinvent public spaces and empty units.

After Cathy joined Adam to look in the archives at how high streets have evolved, the pair met in Southend where Cathy gave a view on the ground about potential strategies to evolve the local offering.

You can watch the Panorama special, which is available throughout 2020 on BBC iPlayer.
