The Institute is delighted to be joining with the Landscape Institute, The Design Council and the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management to launch #RainbowPlaces, a new cross industry networking group for LGBTQ+ members and allies.

#RainbowPlaces will provide a platform for people to have conversations around their experiences, to develop and implement ideas of how to make the industry more inclusive, to raise awareness and visibility, to champion role models and ‘proud’ practices already providing inclusive workplaces, and to lead by example in building a network with LGBTQ+ professionals and allies across sectors.

What we hope comes from this

  • To form a support and communication network to represent our LGBTQ+ members and allies.
  • To help practices to improve LGBTQ+ inclusivity in the workplace.
  • To connect with LGBTQ+ groups in other disciplines.
  • To find areas within the industry with the potential to improve their approach to diversity.
  • To organise social events linked with LI, IPM and other national or local events or LGBTQ+ events within other industries.
  • To improve visibility of LGBTQ+ people within the industry.

Through #RainbowPlaces, the Landscape Institute, the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), The Design Council and the Institute of Place Management (IPM) will work to engage with LGBTQ+ professionals and allies working in the landscape, place and environment professions. We believe that everyone should feel confident to be themselves at work – whether in a global corporation, on a construction site, in a small rural office, or working overseas. Research into inclusive work businesses shows that they’re often more resilient, as a diverse staff brings a broader spectrum of ideas and approaches that are representative of our society.

The Landscape Institute are holding an informal reception this week as part of their Human Skills Day to open discussions how to take ideas forward. The Institute will participate in this. One option is an LGBT+ survey to better understand the current state of the professions regarding LGBT+ inclusivity and look at how best to support individuals and employers.

We will keep all Institute members up to speed with developments with the network and you will have an opportunity to become involved but if you want to register your interest now, you can do so by following this link.
